In 1911, Massachusetts became the first state to prohibit marijuana, but certainly not the last to reform. 105 years later, they joined California, Maine and Nevada and passed Question 4, otherwise known as The Massachusetts Legalization, Regulation and Taxation of Marijuana Initiative.

Legalized sales were due to begin on the same date as California, but pushed out by six months to improve the new laws. Sales are due to begin July 2018, which makes Massachusetts the 7th State to enact reform. And although citizens have to wait to legally purchase, it won’t be the same 3 year long dispensary wait when medicinal marijuana was legalized in 2012.

In response to Jeff Sessions’ childish revoking of the Cole memo, Massachusetts State Representatives Dave Rogers and Mike Connolly filed a “Refusal of Compliance Act,” which would prevent local and state authorities from handing over people who follow state cannabis laws to federal agents.

“… I do think there’s something to the idea that by decriminalizing something, you take it out of the shadows. And then the incentives are not there for the bad guys to do massive criminal sales. Again, you wouldn’t have heard it from me when I was in the Justice Department.”
